Parking was full early and backed out to the highway for more than two miles during my visit..

  • Lake ice covered large area of Lake Superior for a second year in a row.
  • Apostle Islands shore caves were open by Park Service for visitors in early March 2015 when large area of Lake Superior was frozen for a consecutive year. Huge crowd took advantage of the opportunity to hike out and enjoy the spectacle of icicles overhanging on caves and red rock cliffs. The previous such consecutive year occurrence of major lake freeze was about five years ago according to locals.
  • Parking was full early and backed out to the highway for more than two miles during my visit..
  • Visitors trekked over icy road after parking their vehicles to the entrance stairway descending to the lake.....

  • At lake level......from here, it will be a mile walk to the point where icicles begin, followed by another half mile of zigzagging along shoreline of ice-clad red rock cliffs and caves. One can expect a ROUND trip of a 3 miles walk on icy hard surface plus one to two miles to your car. It is not your everyday walk, but a strenuous hiking exercise, especially, if your are carrying a backpack of camera gear.
