Florida - Return of the Bald Eagles, Lakewood Ranch
LAKEWOOD RANCH IN A MISTY MORNING: The eagles are back from the north at about the beginning of September and have been building a new nest at the same location in the tree where the old nest used to be. The nest had collapsed totally in April, 2011, exposing the two young chicks not having a nest to protect themselves before fledged. They seem to come back early this year in anticipation perhaps having to build a new nest. Each day, as the sun rises above the morning fog, the eagles would start going out looking for twits and moss. The construction exhibits a lot of good engineering common sense, much like human would under the same condition and restraint as we shall see in the series of images to follow. They first stabilized the foundation with moss then alternatively layer them with rugged twits. They take rest stops when the twits are too heavy to carry up to the tree during the flight.
