  • LAKEWOOD RANCH IN A MISTY MORNING: The eagles are back from the north at about the beginning of September and have been building a new nest at the same location in the tree where the old nest used to be. The nest had collapsed totally in April, 2011, exposing the two young chicks not having a nest to protect themselves before fledged. They seem to come back early this year in anticipation perhaps having to build a new nest. Each day, as the sun rises above the morning fog, the eagles would start going out looking for twits and moss. The construction exhibits a lot of good engineering common sense, much like human would under the same condition and restraint as we shall see in the series of images to follow. They first stabilized the foundation with moss then alternatively layer them with rugged twits. They take rest stops when the twits are too heavy to carry up to the tree during the flight.

  • The moon is setting in the west as the early morning sun is rising from the east. The nest is seen shrouding the tree after two weeks' of construction. Flowers and vines are hanging in festoon as the eagles were going about their work. On this day, most of the work was done by the male, the new dad.(9/14/2011)
  • The two adults have returned from the north in early September, 2011.
  • View of tree branch where the nest used to locate before September, 2011. The nest site is totally bare and twits fallen away since April 2011.

  • State of the Nest after a two week construction. The nest is about 20 percent, and at this rate of building, it will be October or early November when it is ready for the breeding season.

  • The branch is too heavy to carry up to the nest in one breath. Taking a break on top of the light post on the way. Hear the heavy breathing and pulpitation on his chest? Hard work in raising a family, ah! True for everybody.
